For children in Uganda who have lost a parent or parents to HIV/Aids and other related health issues, and for their caregivers, coping with the everyday challenges they face can be overwhelming. For a number of years now in Mpererwe, Uganda, on the outskirts of Kampala, St. Stephen's Church has provided support as the congregation has been able. In 2004, St. Cuthbert's Church, Hamilton, Ontario partnered with them to lend a hand.
In proposing a partnership, a key question to address was: "Beyond funding help, what might a partnership between two congregations of very different circumstances, one located in Canada's 'Golden Horseshoe' region and the other in Uganda, East Africa, look like? The formal agreement that emerged attempts to address this by listing outcomes for each congregation to pursue.
With the agreement in place, a dialogue has been taken up within each congregation and between the two congregations that continues. What are the learnings for each congregation as this partnership goes forward? An effort is underway to capture and document these with a view to sharing our experience with others.
Meanwhile, the relationship has been rewarding and continues to develop. Approximately fifty children are receiving help with their school fees and related costs, and friendships established between members of both congregations. Visits to Uganda and to Canada are contributing to an honest sharing, learning and building of trust. Prayer is offered in support of each other.
